With supporters and detractors alike weighing in, Megyn Kelly’s unexpected move to NBC has lit up social media today. Move over, Mariah Carey!

Given uneasy relations between Kelly and Fox News Channel’s core audience, it’s not a surprise she would consider leaving. Most likely from within her camp, the idea had been floated publicly in recent months, but it wasn’t clear other networks could afford her hefty price tag.

Despite complaints from some viewers and widely-publicized flaps with then-candidate Donald Trump, Fox executives fought hard to keep Kelly, offering a reported $20 million per year deal.

But in the end, NBC won her over by promising an outsized role at the network that includes six days a week on-air and a key role during major political events.

With news of her move broken by the New York Times, a longtime Fox News foe, it’s clear Kelly has made a clear decision to switch media camps. Whether she can catch on with a new audience after walking away from Fox’s loyal viewership is unclear.

Through Twitter, Kelly issued this public statement earlier this afternoon:

Between Twitter and other social media networks, there has been a tsunami of reactions, with some supportive and others extremely critical. From the comments below her public statement:

Also unclear at this time is whether Kelly will remain with Fox until her contract runs out later this year, or depart immediately. In broadcasting, moves like these normally mean an abrupt end to one’s current program.
