In an embarrassing situation like this, what’s a fawning media to do?

During today’s unveiling ceremony at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, audible gasps as well as laughter were heard as two peculiar depictions of Barack and Michelle Obama were revealed.

Accompanying Michelle on the stage was artist Amy Sherald, whose work seemed to baffle those in attendance.

With Barack was Kehinde Wiley, who created the former president’s portrait. At first, they seemed to struggle to remove the curtain covering the image.

As an added “bonus”, both Obamas addressed the attendees at length, followed by the artists.

In creating these bizarre renditions of the Obamas, what were they thinking?
