While many Americans are applauding Vice President Mike Pence’s decision to leave a NFL game after yet another player protest, CNN instead thinks it was a mere stunt.

After a number of teammates “took the knee”, Pence abruptly left the Indianapolis Colts – San Francisco 49ers match-up, saying later in a tweet that “I left today’s Colts game because @POTUS and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem.”

Quickly latching on to conspiracy theories as fast as Twitter users could create them, designated anti-administration hit man Brian Stelter almost immediately labeled Pence’s entire afternoon as a mere “staged” event, one meant to capitalize on growing anger over what many see as anti-American on-field antics.

He told a panel that the veep’s move “seems like it was a staged moment”:

Others tried to make further build the “case” against Pence, pointing out that an image tweeted today from his account was actually from 2014. Some social media users also pointed to his seemingly-incongruent travel schedule
