A broadcast company owning a number of large television stations has admitted to stripping an accused child rapist’s immigration status from its news coverage.

Earlier today, Cox Media Group watered down its own reporting on alleged child rapist Edgar Mendoza’s background, removing key information indicating the 32-year-old Guatemalan was an illegal alien. Both the headline and opening paragraph were changed.

This affected every news outlet owned by Cox, including Fox25 / Boston, KIRO-7 / Seattle and others.

In the first version, found via Google’s caching, the story opens this way:

Man accused of sexually assaulting 6-year-old illegally immigrated to U.S., officials say

TRENTON, N.J. – A man charged with sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl in Trenton, New Jersey, is in the country illegally, officials say.

Later, it was changed to this:

Man accused of sexually assaulting 6-year-old was interrupted by child’s father

TRENTON, N.J. – A man has been charged with sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl in Trenton, New Jersey, after her father discovered the man in bed with his daughter.

In that second version, this was added at the bottom:

Editor’s Note: This story and headline have been edited to remove emphasis placed on Mendoza’s immigration status.

Here are the images, with the first saved in Google’s cache (but no longer otherwise available) and the second, current version found on station websites:
