Who inside NBC knifed Larry O’Donnell in the back?

After a leaked video montage revealing a full-fledged meltdown suddenly appeared earlier today, the longtime MSNBC personality surely must be wondering who wants him fired.

As Mediaite isn’t disclosing how it obtained the now-infamous clip of O’Donnell becoming progressively more angry as glitches (and especially unseen “hammering”) plague his studio, the race is surely on inside the network to see who sent it to the press.

From Mediaite’s all-caps transcript:

STOP THE HAMMERING UP THERE. WHO’S GOT A HAMMER? WHERE IS IT? WHERE’S THE HAMMER? GO UP ON THE OTHER FLOOR. SOMEBODY GO UP THERE AND STOP THE HAMMERING. STOP THE HAMMERING. I’LL GO DOWN TO THE G-DDAMNED FLOOR MYSELF AND STOP IT, KEEP THE GODDAMNED COMMERCIAL BREAK GOING. CALL F-CKING PHIL GRIFFIN, I DON’T CARE WHO THE F-CK YOU HAVE TO CALL. STOP THE HAMMERING. EMPTY OUT THE G-DDAMNED CONTROL ROOM AND FIND OUT WHERE THIS IS GOING ON.”

After the footage spread like wildfire across social media Wednesday, O’Donnell himself ultimately apologized via Twitter:

While schedule turmoil at Fox made major headlines this year, O’Donnell’s hold on a primetime MSNBC slot has been tenuous at best. After rumors in the spring that he was about to be canned, he announced in May the signing of a new contract that will keep him at 10pm “for the foreseeable future”.

This PR nightmare also comes at a particularly bad time for NBC suits, given a new push by Fox to bolster its lineup. O’Donnell will face particularly strong competition from Laura Ingraham, who will be taking the 10pm slot at that network as Sean Hannity slides back into his previous 9pm position.
