** Update: American Airlines “unable to substantiate” Dunham’s complaint **

With a major airline now working overtime to hunt down two flight attendants who allegedly engaged in a “transphobic conversation”, is it possible Lena Dunham made up the whole thing?

Could careers ultimately be ruined over absolutely nothing?

During a delay at New York’s JFK airport Wednesday, the actress says she overheard two American Airlines attendants “talking about how trans kids are a trend they’d never accept and transness is gross,” according to the text exchange she had with the airline.

“I think it reflects badly on uniformed employees of your company to have that kind of dialogue going on. What if a trans teen was walking behind them?” Dunham added.

With airline representatives scrambling to contain any sudden PR crisis (since Dunham was posting and tweeting all of it), AA wanted to know more, asking for her flight information and location of the incident.

While she indicated where she believed the conversation took place, it turns out she wasn’t even flying American, but Delta.

And Delta flights operate out of different terminals altogether (utilizing 2 and 4, versus 8 for AA), bringing her account into question.

A look at her airport-related tweeting also shows a strange cluster of individuals acting out in her vicinity:

In that period of time, a woman acted out profanely, a passenger yelled at a gate attendant and an airline employee “admonished” Dunham for “having a wrinkled boarding pass”.

All of that, plus the now-infamous transphobic flight attendants, what a day!

Is it possible that ALL of this is either made up, or greatly exaggerated? Did Lena simply forget her meds?
