Was Steve Martin wrong to call Carrie Fisher “beautiful”?
In a since-deleted tweet, the comedian posted a tribute to the late Star Wars actress, then almost immediately came under fire from some who thought his words objectified Fisher and women in general:
Others, however, see the controversy as the latest example of political correctness run amok, where a well-meaning expression becomes politicized.
Martin responded by quickly removing it from his feed, but not before it had been retweeted thousands of times.
During the height of her fame in the 1980s, Fisher spoke out against the way she’d been portrayed as a sex symbol in movies and pop culture.
