Substituting “Jesus” with “Hillary”, a classic gospel song has been re-purposed for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, making for a surreal event in New Hampshire over the holiday weekend.
Voices From the Heart, a local “women’s alternative chorus” based in Portsmouth, altered the lyrics to “Woke Up This Morning (With My Mind on Jesus)”, a Mavis Staples tune. It was instead sung as “Woke up this mornin’ with my mind, stayin’ on Hillary / Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelujah!”
According to its website, Voices From the Heart says of its music, “our powerful and eclectic songs range from African-American spirituals to Korean songs for unity, South African anti-apartheid songs to Macedonian love songs. The songs are powerful testaments to the triumph of the human spirit. Sung with the strength of 200 voices, the songs delight and inspire audiences.”
